Why You’ll Never Have It All
True – yes. Sad – no.
Our expectations for work-life balance are unrealistic, so we will always fall short of them. That is the sad part. There is no work-life balance – only work-life juggling.
Women are natural overachievers. Our modern day roles include such an aggressive range of responsibilities: shop for some bacon, find the recipe for it, cook up the bacon, bring home some bacon, find an opportunity to exercise, find a spiritual life, help your community survive and thrive, and so on.
But this mix of ambitious activities is not bad news. It’s actually great news.
We have rich and well-rounded roles in life. Women are naturally adept at so many of them, especially any that require leadership (observe here just how many in that task list require leadership).
And our brain chemistry helps. The typical female brain has significantly more blood flow than the male brain. This activates more areas of it and facilitates our juggling of ideas and activities. (Read: interferes with our concentration…)
Our fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves. – Shakespeare
We set expectations to achieve excellence in all those areas. We set ourselves up for disappointment.
In this month’s Skirt Strategies, we focus on work-life balance and tips to letting go of perfection, setting expectations to be more realistic, and learning to forgive yourself for not being wonder woman. Make it so, Number One!
