Katie: Are you good at accepting criticism? If you are, you’re my hero. But if you’re like the rest of us, it probably derails your self-confidence pretty quickly.

It happened to me last week. Someone gave me a little bit of feedback about something that I had done with a client and I immediately made it about me.

Here are some steps you can take – in order to get through this more productively.

First of all – Acknowledge it when someone’s giving you the feedback. Don’t get defensive. That immediately kills productivity.

Secondly – Just walk away from it. Put yourself in a different area. Let it go for a minute.

Third – Come back to it in processing. Try to be objective about what you heard. Was there some value in it? At the heart of it, there probably was.

And then fourth – Put it in some sort of context by reframing it. Don’t make it about you. Make it about the situation.

Last of all – Bring it to closure. Come back to the person and thank them for it. Let them know you appreciate the feedback or just do something about it. In the very least, you can just take it into account and maybe not do anything at all.

Everyday life requires everyday leading. Good luck on your leadership journey!
