One word – That’s all it takes to turn a positive into a negative. Today, we’re learning how to turn it all around. Katie Snapp has a tip in this week’s Skirt Strategies.

Katie: Do you know what it’s like when someone tells you something nice? And then it’s followed by a – “But…” Well, those are statements that I think need the “but” removed. I call that – “The But-ectomy.”

Listen to the difference:

“Jessica. That report you generated for me was great. But I need the typos removed for my 2:00 o’clock meeting.”

Versus:

“Jessica. That report you generated for me was great. I need the typos removed for my 2:00 o’clock meeting.”

Viola! What a difference! You just had a But-ectomy.

If you want to adapt this into your communication style, you can do it in two easy steps.

1. Consider first what you want to say and then split it into two standalone sentences. Often, the first one is a compliment or a positive. And the second one should stand on its own.

2. Then when you get to the point where you’re tempted to say – “But…” Simply say nothing. Now you have the But-ectomy!

Everyday life requires everyday leading. Good luck on your leadership journey!
